Beet Production for Ethanol in Waikato: Yields and Problems Encountered in Growing the Crop
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sugar and fodder beet were grown in three years to assess the potential sugar yield for ethanol production in the region. Fresh weight root yields ranged from 70-85 t/ha for sugar beet and 55-136 t/ha for fodder beet. Sugar contents averaged 15% for sugar beet and 10117o for fodder beet resulting in sugar yields of 10-12 t/ha and 5-12 t/ha respectively. Consistently higher sugar yield from sugar beet and a 4% higher root dry matter favoured its use over fodder beet. These sugar beet yields were considered to be below the environmental potential because of erratic, below optimum density plant stands of 40 000-80 000/ha resulting from establishment problems. The herbicide lenacil at 2 kg ai/ha and the insecticides carbofuran or disulfoton at 1.75 kg ailha were found to reduce plant stands by 21-27% with disulfoton being increasingly phytotoxic when used with lenacil or starter fertiliser. Without lenacil or insecticide, stand survival was 40-60% and further problems with soil fungi or nematodes were suggested. Though field establishment was improved 50% by methyl bromide soil fumigation, the use of fungicides and nematicides failed to identify the problem's cause. It was concluded that a 60-70 t/ha sugar beet yield giving 10-11 t/ha of sugar would be a reasonable commercial expectation for the region provided uniform stands of adequate density could be established. Sugar beet response to N fertilization as assessed by late season chlorophyll and leaf area index measurements in a semi-arid environment
In a 3-year experiment (2002-2004), five N rates (0, 60, 120, 180, 240 kg N ha-1) were applied to sugar beets arranged in a Randomized Complete Block design with six replications. Experimentation took place under the semi-arid, irrigated conditions of central Greece. The aim of this work was to study the late season response of sugar beet crop to N fertilization as assessed by non-destructive m...

Remote sensing technology is widely used in environmental and agricultural research, and nowadays it has become a valuable and reliable source of information for the management of crop production and assessment of global supply and demands for these products. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using MODIS data and vegetation indices based on sugar beet growth moni...
متن کاملQualitative characteristics of sugar beet as affected by different broadleaf herbicides combinations
ABSTRACT-Several herbicides are registered for selective weed control in sugar beet; however, no single chemical herbicide can control all weeds in beet fields. Frequently, two or more herbicides may have to be combined sequentially or as tank mixed to achieve adequate broad-spectrum weed control. In order to evaluate the effects of some combinations of broadleaf herbicides on sugar beet yield ...
متن کاملPresenting an empirical model for determining the sugar beet evapotranspiration by GDD parameter (Case study: Torbat-Jam, Iran)
So far, various methods have been presented for determining reference crop evapotranspiration in different parts of the world. The most popular and prestigious of them are probably the combined methods of Penman family, modified Blany-Criddle, Hargreaves - Samani and thornthwaite. Due to lack of lysimeter data in many parts of Iran, presenting an equation according to the regional condition wit...
متن کاملSimulation of the Effect of Salinity and Water Stress on Sugar beet Using the System Dynamics Approach
Due to the growing population, crop production is one of the essential needs of the society. Since soil and water salinity can have a great impact on the crop yield loss; so, the appropriate irrigation method can be applied to reduce these effects. In this study, the system dynamics model was developed using VENSIM. The model simulated the effect of salinity and water stress on the crop yield, ...
